Commonly Used HTML Tags

HTML is always changing. Tags that I learned about in school don't exist anymore and new tags are taking their place. Sometimes tags' meanings change overtime as well. As you code, you're bound to encounter some tags you don't recognize. Here are some of the most common:

HTML tables are also very common, especially on older sites. Back in the 1990s people would build websites strictly out of tables. Now they're used for what they're supposed to be used for -- displaying data. Due to the complexity of tables, I've included comments to help explain what you're seeing.

Other tags are used for organizing content. Without any styles, they don't look any different from each other, but they help browsers and search engines better understand what information will be displayed inside them.

There are over 150 different types of HTML tags, but some of them are very obscure and rarely used such as <ruby> or very complicated such as <canvas>. Don't feel too overwhelmed by the number of tags though, as you will mostly only be using the ones listed in this article.
